The Kitchen (excerpt)

fruitsandvegetablesThe kitchen, which traditionally contained the hearth for cooking and warmth, is often considered the heart of the home. It is a place of nourishing, a place of gathering and cooking, a place of work and creation. Activities in the kitchen are rhythmical and transformative.

Cooking is a transformation through warmth. The rhythms of the day are marked in the kitchen by the creation of meals.  Cooking transforms food. Through warmth and fire, through cutting and shaping, through human activity, nourishment is created for the family. Parents can imbue their food with soul and spiritual warmth through their intentions during the process of cooking and presenting and giving the meal to their families.

In our search for health and wellness and youth and beauty, we are particularly susceptible to food fads and eating trends. It is helpful to have a few guidelines to help in our food choices. Eating local food is an important consideration; by eating locally raised food, we are eating in harmony with the season, as well as supporting and connecting with local growers.
